Tell me every detail they know about potty training. what works.. what doesn't work... I think it's time to start but am so freaked out about starting!!!
Find his "currency". Does he have something he loves? Like flips over? Buy it and put it out of reach but in sight and explain that he'll get it once he goes potty. If he has an accident then it goes back up. And pull ups make it harder. Only use them for nap/night. If you are going out and are worried over pee, put pullup over undies. Lastly put a potty in your car with Clorox wipes, baby wipes, and a bag to dispose of stuff... That way you have it for emergencies. Good luck, it's the suckiest part of momhood.
I am a firm believer in the 'naked method'. I always thought it was insanity to let your kid walk around nakey when training but it really works. I didn't use a little potty, I just went strait to the big potty and it worked well for us. Noah loved it when I put Cheerios in the potty for him to shoot. He looked forward to that more than the treat he got when he successfully went potty.
Naked method worked like a dream for me too. Sinking cheerios or fruit loops was always a good bet for giggles from the loo instead of tears. Pullups never, ever worked for me. Even when I used them for MY convenience... it always backfired. They are just too similar to diapers. I also let my little pick out their new big girl/boy panties/undies. I would exaggeratedly 'mourn' when their new undies got 'soiled', so so sad which worked like a charm because they didn't want to mess up the undies they picked out. Also, each night when Shawn got home and that child had a successful day on the potty, snicker, Shawn would have a sweet treat for them... time outside doing something extra fun, trip to the park after dinner, little squirt gun, etc. This worked because my kids LIVED to please daddy. Good luck. It truly ranks as one of the hardest milestones. With our 3, one was a breeze (few days of training and DONE), one was challenging but manageable, and one was a trial in every respect... I even stalled until he was 4... yep, I had to threaten him with not getting to go to kindergarten if he did not 'getter done!'
This is the only thing I did well with both Grant and Grace, they were trained before they were two. I used the book "Toilet training in Less than a Day" and it totally works. It's intense, stay at home for several days doing it, but it works. The idea is once they are in undies, don't put a diaper back on (we did at night though). You model with a doll, set a timer, try every time the timer goes off, lots of rewards/treats/drinks, etc.
