Upon reading tons of websites about Vegetarianism, I am going to Pledge to be Veg for 30 days! (at least) I hope to help my body feel better and healthier and I'm excited to get started. After reading those darn PETA sites...my heart is BROKEN in to a million shattered peices for animal cruelty and I've always felt strongly about it. But the site basically says that by eating meat, I am 'supporting animal cruelty' and believe me.. those animals are treated c.r.u.e.l.y! So here starts a new healthier me!
I don't mean to offend anyone... Just documenting the change of my eating habits :)

My dad has been veg. for 25 years now and is in wonderful physical shape. He turns 60 this year and looks like he's in his 40s. There are lots of yummy meat substitutes such as morning star bacon and sausage, they have loma lima (i think thats the brand) little links that are good with ketchup, and of course things like boca burgers, etc. They even have veggie "ground meat" like for spaghetti or sloppy joes and fake chicken patties and nuggets... Garden Cove over at pratt and meridian st have a great selection and krogers and target and even walmart have some too. I grew up eating both veggie "meat" and real meat, and still prefer the veggie sausage. Call me if you need anymore info on where to get stuff/what is yum.
PS. make sure to supplement your protein with either protein shakes or lots of beans and rice and such. :) GOOD LUCK!!!
Wow thanks Beth!! One time i bought the Boca burgers.. and i took one bite then threw the entire box away i hated it so bad lol.But the ground 'meat' sounds good for tacos and hamburger helper and taco souop and stuff!! I'll have to try it!!
LOL, there are some brands of the boca "like" burgers that are actually really good, I just couldn't remember the names of the brands. Morning start makes some, garden burger maybe makes another...??? Not sure, I'll try to look next time i go to the store.
Yay! I've been veg for 2 months now. I watched that "meet your meat" and will not touch meat again! My advice is vegcooking.com. It has tons of yummy recipes. I also bought a cookbook. I went to the library and checked out some cookbooks went to a copier and copied the ones I liked and put them in a folder. So I didn't have to buy the entire book. Vegetarian times is a great magazine too that has good tips and stuff.
If you're going vegan (no milk or dairy) it's really hard. I'm lacto-ovo which means I do milk and eggs. I try to use substitutes if I can and hope to be vegan in the future. But I can't go cold turkey like I did going vegetarian. But I feel guilty especially knowing the take the brand new calves from their mothers just so we can steal their milk. UGH!
Anyways, I'm excited. Maybe we can exchange recipes. I have a recipe blog and post them there. I haven't yet but will be soon! My favorite and really easy is stuffed peppers. Go buy bell peppers and scoop out the inside. Boil them for 7-10 minutes. Make a box of cous-cous and mix with cream cheese and stuff inside. DELICIOUS! And it feels you up like steak.
Congrats!
Girl, I know!! I had a fire re-lit under me when I watched part of that documentary on HBO about the cruelty to the cows. I've been slowly trying to transition over to meats, eggs, etc that are raised on farms where the animals are not treated that way. It's more expensive but I think, definitely worth it. It is sooo incredibly sad to see those poor animals.
